Manager Phil Brown has confirmed that he has missed out on former Charlton Athletic striker Michael Smith.

The 22 year old 6ft 4in player has decided to move to Swindon Town in a deal worth a reported £100,000, and he did have options available to him, including us.

Speaking to the Echo, Brown talked about his disappointment at missing out on the striker given he had scored ten goals in 25 games whilst on a six month loan to Wimbledon in the first half the season, but unfortunately that is football and it happens during the transfer windows.

‘Smith had been a target of our for this January but it does look like we’ve missed out on him now. He’s chosen to join a club at a higher level which is understandable and you will always miss out on people at this time of year.’

With only a week or so left of this month’s window the gaffer does go on however to say that we are still in discussions with clubs over other targets that he would like to bring in this month and he obviously has his fingers crossed that he has more success in their directions than he did in this one.

Brown doesn’t however qualify whether or not he’s talking about permanent deals or loan options.

The lad had a lot of interest in him it seems. I’m happy with the options we have up front though really.
