Manager Phil Brown has said he was devastated to see Southend lose to Wimbledon on penalties last night, mainly because he feels we should’ve wrapped the game up in normal time.

Southend had the lead in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and we were good value for the two one scoreline thanks to a brace from Jack Payne, but two minutes from time a 22 yard strike took it away from us and we went down four two on penalties.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, the gaffer said.

‘I’m devastated. The game should never have gone to penalties because we had so many chances to win the game and they never looked like getting an equaliser. I can’t make any more excuses. We’re getting so many crosses into the box and so many chances but we’re not taking them and it can’t keep happening.’

Whilst admitting that their leveller was a worldy and that you can’t legislate for something like that, the bottom line is we should’ve seen the game through or we should’ve increased our lead – either would’ve resulted in the right result for our dominance in the game.

‘We should’ve been out of sight if truth be told. We need to get back that winning mentality and it was a fantastic chance to do just that, which we haven’t taken.’

The positives from the match, were goalscorer Jack Payne who Brown described as being ‘everywhere’ on the pitch and very impressive, saying he has certainly worked his way into contention for a start against Oxford.

The gaffer was also pleased with the debut of Gary Deegan who he said did very well in the game when you consider his fitness and lack of game time of late.
