Brown: Hurst Great Business

Last season Southend paid the price for leaving contract negotiations too late but we weren’t going to do this with Kevan Hurst and risk losing a key player this summer.

Talks with key players is something that we’ve said we’ve been keen to do and they don’t come much more key than him.

Not one but two players that made the League 2 PFA Team of the Year ended up leaving us to somebody else’s gain and that was always the risk with Hurst, who would’ve courted interest in the summer due to the season that he’s had.

Following the signing of his new two-year contract on Friday though he’ll cost a pretty penny if anyone wants to take him away from Roots Hall now.

Phil Brown has spoken on the official website in his interview about his delight at securing the services of Hurst and how important that it was we managed this due to the key role he’s played and how this will be the case going forward as he’s a big part of the vision that he has for the club.

Brown hopes that others will soon commit their futures to Southend and follow his example in that respect and his example set by his performances, with the signing of his new contract not only ‘great business’ but also ‘a real sign that the club is moving in the right direction’.
