Paul Sturrock has put the Paul Benson stories to bed ahead of Southend’s meeting with his current club Cheltenham tonight.

Benson is someone that Sturrock tried to bring to Southend back along, however contrary to reports The Shrimpers boss, as he told The Echo, has dismissed the thought that he ever came close to signing him.

Financially Southend just couldn’t compete: ‘I’ve not come close to signing Paul as I think you will find his wages are very lucrative.

‘When he went from Charlton to Swindon he got a really good deal and it was that move that took him out of my range.’

The veteran striker, a boyhood Southend fan, has already had a loan spell with Portsmouth this season but is seeing out this one with Cheltenham.
